Tunnel Lighting Management Projects

Khorfakkan Road Tunnels (2025)
During 2025 all of the 10 tunnels on Khorfakkan Road were retrofitted with new LED lighting and a state of the art TLMS. All of the 6400 LED luminaires are individually monitored, so are all the LDB’s and ELDB’s. Each of the 10 tubes has its own redundant PLC controlled from the L20 sensor. The PLC’s of the two driving directions are linked via a fibre-optic ring. Each PLC is equipped with a Graphical User Interface (GUI). These industrial PC’s are accessible via a secured web-link over the 4G/5G network and offer Web Services. In addition configurable alarms are forwarded to the maintenance teams via e-mail and SMS.

Maryah Island Tunnels - Abu Dhabi (2022)
This 3 km, 4-tube tunnel uses cutting-edge lighting control technology in line with upcoming CIE88-2025 standards. Three entrances feature L20 luminance meters, and 14 stainless steel 316L panels connected via a fiber-optic network to a central PLC. All 1,100 luminaires are individually monitored and controlled. Base lighting, running 24/7 backed-up on UPS, it doubles as emergency lighting. The system was designed by EEC, built by Revetec, and integrated by Mtech, who developed the PLC software, SCADA interface, and the GUI visualisation and operating interface.

Sheikh Zayed Tunnels -
Abu Dhabi (2012)
The Shaikh Zayed tunnels in Abu Dhabi, each about 3 km long, are the UAE’s longest and were the world’s longest LED-lit tunnels when opened in 2012. They feature 5,300 individually controlled 48W LED luminaires and 1,600 dimmed, voltage-stabilized HPS luminaires (250/400W). EEC co-designed the advanced lighting management system, built in Switzerland and Italy. The system has operated over 105'000 hours without major failures. The luminaire control modules (LPL) achieved an MTBF >1'000'000h.
